Headstart Arabic Early Years Assessment Tool
The Headstart Arabic Early Years Assessment Tool (HAEYA) is a computerized assessment designed to assess key cognitive skills and functions, which are research-validated as foundational for the acquisition core academic skills – such as reading, writing, and numeracy. Its engaging and fast-paced design motivates children to remain attentive and complete all assessment tasks.
The tool features 13 tasks that evaluate a range of cognitive functions – including:
- Arabic Letter Shape Recognition
- Quantity Counting and perception
- Numerical Cognition
- Verbal Retrieval Speed and Naming
- Immediate and Working Verbal Memory
- Visual Attention
- Visual Perception
- Visual Memory
- Color Naming
- Phonological Awareness
- Auditory Comprehension
Research on cognitive development and learning skill acquisition consistently demonstrates the predictive validity of these functions regarding both academic success and the early identification of learning difficulties in preschool-aged children. Accordingly, the tool facilitates the identification of learners who exhibit a risk of developing learning difficulties, allowing individualized early intervention based on each learner’s observed cognitive profile.
